Alan is feeding scratch to the hens to get them started in the morning. Thanksgiving Day 2010, -18 this morning. The greenhouse makes a great run! Six hens and 6 eggs yesterday. Backyard chickens are very entertaining. We have daily visits from the local children. Thanks to Greg Michaud from The Old Feed Store in Fort Collins, CO, for getting us started. On the farm there are four chickens and one rooster. I remember when each of them were just hatched from an egg and took lots of pictures of them as they grew so I feel like they are family. I am an early riser and after I start the coffee, I go outside and usually the chickens are already waiting for me after their three minute walk from the barn in the front yard. I make a clucking noise and the hens run up to me just like a Roadrunner cartoon.
