I’ve got a pet chicken who is very special. She is about 5 months old, she’s black, and so so sweet. And since she was born one of her legs didn’t work, we think someone dropped her. Her other leg is having trouble supporting her because shes getting big. Pretty much she just flops around and gets momentum with her wings. Recently we’ve had to move her inside away from the rest of the chicken herd and she stays in my brothers room in a big plastic container.

I worry that she’s going to get depressed because she can’t be with her chicken friends and all she does is sit there all day by herself, i don’t want her to get depressed. And i know the container isn’t very comftorable for her and its hard for her to move. I tried to give her food today but she didn’t really want it and i noticed that she had green poop. I’m so worried shes sick! i love her so much she’s so sweet! If anybody knows anything i can do to help her PLEASE let me know!

I have chickens too and my mom puts Apple Cider Vinegar in their water because it helps them with bacteria, parasites and the like. Also make sure you clean out her cage a lot and that she has new straw or hay. Have you taken her to the vet about her leg? Maybe a vet can help. Chickens also need dirt to clean their feathers and absorb extra moisture, so make sure she has that. I’d also give her a while to be with her friends and outside every day for exercise. If you have a lot of chickens make sure they don’t pick on her. I hope she gets well soon :-)

that’s so sad. There is a type of chicken, the Cornish X that is bred by the big meat producers to get big really fast. They are not really pets because eventually their legs break from so much weight so fast. The fact that both legs have given out makes me think you might have one. Is she white and sort of pleasantly dull? Did you get her at a feed store? Some of the things you say above makes me think this is the problem. If so, they really can’t live much past five months because it would be cruel and they suffer. If you think she is Cornish X you need to put her out. My Vet helps me with my chickens that are sick and it costs at 25 bucks. It’s sad because you love her so much, I know. Also, the green poo is not a good sign, I would suggest a packet of antibiotics from the feed store -if you know she is not a Cornish X. Hope this helps you figure out what to do.

cornish X are all white because they are a white cornish an white rock cross. also they don’t survive anywhere near 5 months with out having heart failure. sounds like it might be splayed leg. its a common problem with chicks who are raised on slippery surfaces and sometimes just for no reason they get it. it also could be a slipped tendon (google this to learn more), or a deficiently in niacin . offer her some niacin tablets and brewers yeast which help support the legs. put 100mg of niacin tablets per 1 gallon of water and that should help. yogurt has electrolytes in it which will help. you can try making her a splint if you think spayled leg is the problem. the thing is splayed legs are common in chicks not so much chickens so im not so sure. a vet would be good help.
