It is late November 2010 and these girls were born in late July 2009. This is their first mature molt. Fewer eggs have been laid and they are much more skittish.

Backyard Chickens at 5 below zero
Alan is feeding scratch to the hens to get them started in the morning. Thanksgiving Day 2010, -18 this morning. The greenhouse makes a great run! Six hens and 6 eggs yesterday. Backyard chickens are very entertaining. We have daily visits from the local children. Thanks to Greg Michaud from The Old Feed Store in Fort Collins, CO, for getting us started. Urban farm animals need to be allowed throughout the US. Lobby your local government to allow back yard chickens.
